Ikorodu City Stand Between Enugu Rangers And Historic NPFL Title

The 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season ends on Sunday with perched one point ahead of and two simultaneous fixtures set to hand the title to one club or the other.

Rangers, on 65 points, travel to Ikorodu City and will play at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos; Rivers, on 64, host Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in with a 4pm kick-off. A Rangers victory in Lagos will guarantee the league title regardless of other results. If Rivers win and Rangers draw or lose, Rivers will overtake them and lift the championship.

The numbers underline what is on the line. Rangers have 65 points after 37 rounds and are unbeaten in their last three league matches. They have beaten Ikorodu City in all three previous NPFL meetings. Rivers sit on 64, have recorded six away wins this season to Rangers' five, and arrive in Port Harcourt after a midweek 2-0 win over academy side G12 in the Round of 64 of the President Federation Cup.

Rivers coach said he was pleased with his players' performance against G12 on Tuesday and stressed that the cup tie is behind them as attention turns to Katsina United. The Rivers State Government, led by Governor , has approved free entry for supporters to the final match and arranged free shuttle buses from several points across Port Harcourt, an effort designed to swell the home crowd.

Ikorodu City sit fourth on the table with 58 points and still have continental qualification to play for; they can reach the CAF Confederation Cup if results fall their way. That potential for an upset in Lagos adds another variable. At the same time, relegation is not yet settled across the NPFL: Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists have already been condemned to the drop, but the final day will settle other survival battles as simultaneous kick-offs across 10 centres decide both the title and relegation places.

Recent form points to two different plausible endings. Rangers took a confidence-boosting win in in recent weeks and arrive at Ikorodu with a record of success against their hosts. Rivers have been productive at home and on the road — their recent string includes victories over Abia Warriors, 3-0 in Port Harcourt and 3-2 in Bauchi — and their supporters will be admitted free and ferried to the stadium in the hope of creating a deafening advantage at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

The tension is simple and absolute: Rangers can end the season without looking around by taking three points in Lagos. Rivers, playing at home before a government-backed crowd, can only take the title if they win and Rangers fail to match them. Ikorodu City, chasing continental football, and other mid-table sides still have outcomes to chase that could influence the title race.

What happens next is straightforward and will be decided on the pitch. If Rangers win in Lagos they will claim the NPFL crown, a ninth top-flight title that would draw them level with the country’s most successful side. If they fail to win and Rivers do their part in Port Harcourt, the crown will shift to Rivers United. For the fans filling the free buses and for Finidi George’s squad, the cup result in was a warm-up; the real season finale arrives Sunday afternoon.
