EFCC Makes Single Largest Recovery in History, Seizes 753 Duplexes in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has achieved a major milestone with its largest recovery to date.

According to a statement from the agency, on December 2, 2024, Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie granted a final forfeiture ruling, allowing the EFCC to seize 753 units of duplexes and other apartments in Abuja.

The forfeited estate, spanning 150,500 square meters, is situated in the Lokogoma District of Abuja.

According to the EFCC, the property was acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities by a former high-ranking government official.

“Ruling on the Commission’s application for the final forfeiture of the property, Justice Onwuegbuzie held that the respondent have not shown cause as to why he should not lose the property, ‘which has been reasonably suspected to have been acquired with proceeds of unlawful activities, the property is hereby finally forfeited to the federal government.”

The EFCC's successful forfeiture was made possible by the provisions of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act and Section 44 (2) B of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This historic recovery is a testament to the EFCC's unwavering commitment to combating economic and financial crimes.

By depriving suspects of the proceeds of their crimes, the EFCC aims to disrupt and dismantle illicit financial networks.

The EFCC's efforts have yielded significant results, and this latest achievement marks a major milestone in the agency's history.

The recovery of the 753 duplexes in Abuja sends a strong message that the EFCC will relentlessly pursue and recover proceeds of crime, no matter how complex or sophisticated the schemes may be.
