It was in the discussion of the calamity that befell Nigeria a few days to Christmas. Ibadan, the capital city of the Yoruba, had taken a sizeable chunk of the tragedy. Thirty five persons, the bulk of whom were kids, had been trampled to death in a stampede. The dead and a crowd estimated to be about ten thousand, had heeded invitation to attend a funfair where freebies, which included the sum of N5000, would be shared per attendee. Three persons were arrested and charged before an Ibadan Magistrate court on account of the deaths. They were Naomi Silekunola, an ex-Queen of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja I1; Oriyomi Hamzat, a popular radio owner and presenter and principal of the school that served as venue for the event. Bodija Explosion: Oyo Govt. approves ₦4.5billion for Victims as Makinde explains why he reshuffled cabinet

The Oyo State Government has approved the sum of ₦4.5 billion as financial support to the survivors and victims of the Bodija explosion which occurred on January 16, 2024. This decision was taken at the ongoing Executive Council meeting at the Executive Chambers of the Governor's office. According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, this is apart from the over ₦200 million that the State Government had expended on accommodation, feeding, hospital and security bills following the tragic incident. Also the Council approved the recommendation of the 10 man committee to revoke the Title of two properties off Adeyi avenue, scene of the explosion, in the overall interest of the public and that the Government should build a monument on the location of the revoked land in memory of victims of the tragedy. I first met Chief Joop Berkhout around 1985, when the Ugandan, Princess of Toro, the tall exotic beauty with the neck of a gazelle, visited Nigeria. Makinde approves new Alaafin

A new Alaafin of Oyo has been formally approved by Governor Seyi Makinde. A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said that Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by the Governor of Oyo State. According to the commissioner, a statement to this effect has been issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, who said that the announcement has put to rest, all the socio and legal bickerings that have ensued since the demise of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022. Hon. Ademola Ojo called on all citizens of Oyo State to join the Government in celebrating this momentus occasion and lend their support to the new Alaafin of Oyo. The Commissioner prays that his reign will bring peace, prosperity and unity to the historic Oyo Kingdom.

Makinde Approves New Eleruwa of Eruwa

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has approved the appointment of Prince Adebayo Adegbola as the new Eleruwa of Eruwa land. This was according to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade. The Commissioner said according to a document by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo, the stool of Eleruwa has remained vacant following recent legal proceedings, specifically the dismissal of Suit No. HER/10/23 by the High Court of Oyo State on October 22, 2024. Uninterrupted Power Supply Takes-off In Ibadan

The 11 Megawatts Ibadan Hybrid Power Project commissioned by Governor Seyi Makinde early this month, has taken off. In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the whole of the Oyo State Secretariat and its environs, covering all Ministries, Departments and Agencies including the Secretariat Clinic, the State House of Assembly and the Governor's office, have started to experience uninterrupted power supply. This development is a fulfilment of Governor Seyi Makinde's promise to commence the process of power independence for the State. The first phase of the project according to the statement is a 5MW integrated power plant consisting of solar power and natural gas. The next phase will extend uninterrupted power supply to other critical arms of government including selected schools, Adeoyo and Ring road Hospitals, the High Court complex and Adamasingba Stadium, among others. Ibadan Children Funfair Tragedy: Oyo Government Mourns, Deploys Rapid Response Team

The Oyo State Government mourns the tragic loss of lives at a children's carnival in Ibadan. In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, a stampede occurred at the private children's fun fair held at Basorun Islamic High School, leading to loss of lives, mostly children, with some others injured in the early hours of today. According to the statement, the State Government swiftly mobilised a rapid response team following the breaking of the incident. Minimum Wage: Makinde Gifts Oyo Workers New Year Package

Government workers in Oyo State will begin to enjoy the ₦80,000 minimum wage from January 2025. A statement from the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated that the Oyo State Government this morning reached an agreement with organized labour on the implementation of the minimum wage and consequential adjustments. Reaching the agreement, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo and the Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni, led others in signing for Government while Comrade Kayode Martins of the NLC and Comrade Bosun Olabiyi of the TUC alongside other labour leaders signed for the organised labour. The negotiating council agreed that the new minimum wage salary structure shall be effective nominally from July 1st, 2024 but financially from January 1st, 2025.
