It was in the discussion of the calamity that befell Nigeria a few days to Christmas. Ibadan, the capital city of the Yoruba, had taken a sizeable chunk of the tragedy. Thirty five persons, the bulk of whom were kids, had been trampled to death in a stampede. The dead and a crowd estimated to be about ten thousand, had heeded invitation to attend a funfair where freebies, which included the sum of N5000, would be shared per attendee. Three persons were arrested and charged before an Ibadan Magistrate court on account of the deaths. They were Naomi Silekunola, an ex-Queen of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja I1; Oriyomi Hamzat, a popular radio owner and presenter and principal of the school that served as venue for the event. Bodija Explosion: Oyo Govt. approves ₦4.5billion for Victims as Makinde explains why he reshuffled cabinet

The Oyo State Government has approved the sum of ₦4.5 billion as financial support to the survivors and victims of the Bodija explosion which occurred on January 16, 2024. This decision was taken at the ongoing Executive Council meeting at the Executive Chambers of the Governor's office. According to the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, this is apart from the over ₦200 million that the State Government had expended on accommodation, feeding, hospital and security bills following the tragic incident. The Oyo State Police Command has held a moment of silence in honour of the 14-year-old student killed by a Police stray bullet in Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday 20th May, 2025. Security: Makinde confronts banditry with aircraft

Security in Oyo State will be beefed up with the immediate procurement of two aircraft to curb the menace of illegal miners, kidnappers and other forms of security threats, particularly in the vast inter land of Oyo State. The Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said in a release after the Executive Council meeting yesterday that the procurement was approved in a renewed determination by the Government to secure the State further from the influx of bandits and the perpetration of their enterprise. Makinde approves new Alaafin

A new Alaafin of Oyo has been formally approved by Governor Seyi Makinde. A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said that Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade after thorough consultations and divinations, has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by the Governor of Oyo State. According to the commissioner, a statement to this effect has been issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ademola Ojo, who said that the announcement has put to rest, all the socio and legal bickerings that have ensued since the demise of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022. Hon. Ademola Ojo called on all citizens of Oyo State to join the Government in celebrating this momentus occasion and lend their support to the new Alaafin of Oyo. The Commissioner prays that his reign will bring peace, prosperity and unity to the historic Oyo Kingdom.
