BREAKING: Tinubu directs Taiwo Oyedele to take over from Wale Edun

President directed to hand over the finance and economy brief to , with the transfer set to be completed by Thursday 23rd April, 2026. Senator announced the change in a memo and said Edun had been sacked. The instruction leaves the finance ministry with a deadline and a named successor already identified.

Akume Memo On Edun

Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the President had exercised powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of (1999, as amended). He also said the outgoing ministers were thanked for their service and that “the process of reinvigoration shall be continuous.”

The memo placed the handover on a fixed timetable: “all handing over and taking over processes should be completed on or before close of business on Thursday 23rd April, 2026.” That gives Edun and the incoming appointee a firm end point for the transition, rather than an open-ended transfer of duties.

Taiwo Oyedele Takes Over

Taiwo Oyedele, formerly minister of state for finance, was named to take over from Edun as minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy. The change ties the handover to the portfolio that oversees both finance policy and the coordinating role over the economy.

The memo also said the changes were aimed at “strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.” That places the replacement inside a broader cabinet reshuffle rather than treating it as a standalone move.

Housing Portfolio Shift

The same memo said was sacked and directed to hand over to the Minister of State in the ministry. It also named Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD.) as the ministerial nominee and minister designate for the Housing and Urban Development Ministry.

For Edun, the immediate task is procedural: complete the handover by the Thursday deadline and transfer the ministry’s work to Oyedele. For the government, the question now is how quickly the new lineup turns the memo’s stated goal of tighter coordination into day-to-day decisions across the finance ministry and the wider economy.
