and Kaizer Chiefs were due to meet at a sold-out on Sunday in a Premier Soccer League clash that veteran commentator said would be fierce and decisive. "To be honest, it's very interesting. It's like in England, between Arsenal and Man City – even here is the same, but, again, it all depends on the attitude of the Pirates players on the day," Sono said.

The numbers underline what is at stake. Pirates sit top of the table after an eight-match unbeaten league run that includes six wins and two draws and had not lost a league match since a 2-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns in February. Chiefs arrive third after a six-match unbeaten run made up of five wins and one draw.

Squad availability sharpened the preview. Orlando Pirates reported Sihle Nduli, Tapelo Xoki and Kabelo Dlamini sidelined through injury, while , and could return after missing the match against AmaZulu. The club listed a probable XI of Chaine, Sebelebele, Hotto, Seema, Sibisi, Mbatha, Makhaula, Mofokeng, Appollis, Moremi and Mbuthuma and warned: "The fixture poses a significant hurdle, but Pirates one could be equipped to scale with no new names added to the injury list, while the likes of Thalente Mbatha, Andre de Jong and Evidence Makgopa could be back in action after missing out on the clash against AmaZulu."

Chiefs named a probable XI of Petersen, Monyane, Cross, Miguel, McCarthy, Maboe, Ndlovu, Shabalala, Duba, Lilepo and Silva and had no players suspended for Sunday’s match. The club has players working their way back to fitness — Zitha Kwinika, Rushwin Dortley and goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari — and had returned to full training but had not yet played in a competitive match.

The recent head-to-head and calendar context add weight. Pirates beat Chiefs 3-0 in their previous fixture in February, but Jomo Sono said revenge and pride would make this meeting different. "Because it's not going to be an easy game, and Chiefs are also playing for pride – I don't think there'll be points given there, I think it's going to be a hell of a fight," he said.

That friction matters beyond bragging rights. The derby is embedded in a title race in which Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have been described as neck and neck. Sono framed the championship as unresolved: "The [title] will be decided in the last two games of the league, not now – the last two games will decide who's winning the league." He added a warning about complacency: "I think there are about five games left, both teams will drop points on the way, for sure! Both teams will drop, we just don't know which one is going to drop more."

The tension is obvious on the team sheets. Pirates arrive unbeaten in the league since February but ask players away through injury to step up if called upon. Chiefs arrive on form and without suspensions, bolstered by partially fit players who could change the balance. Sono did not hide his preference — or the uncertainty: "But, at the end of the day, I would love for Pirates to win because I'm a Pirate – I'm being honest, but it's not going to be easy."

Sunday’s kickoff will do more than decide local bragging rights; it will sharpen a title picture heading into the season’s closing stages. If Sono is right that points will be dropped and the championship will be decided by the final two matches, this derby is less a climax than a pressure test — one that could tilt momentum, expose depth, and make the run-in that follows the most consequential stretch of the campaign.

For now, the stadium will be full, both sets of supporters expect fireworks, and one man who has watched South African football for decades summed it up simply: "Who's winning it? Pirates. I want Pirates, you heard me say I'm a Pirate. You want me to be a Pirate and say Sundowns?"
