VIDEO: Female officer seen punching woman during El Paso retail shop arrest video

Videos made public this week show officers wrestling to the floor inside a clothing shop on in before the encounter moved outside, where a female officer punched her in the face. The footage, which surfaced Wednesday’s after the incident and prompted a statement from police on Friday morning, shows at least two officers pinning Viramontes against a counter as they tried to control her and secure her arms.

Viramontes struggled as the officers worked to bring her under control, then was forced into a kneeling position on the floor while they continued trying to detain her. Once outside the store, additional officers were present and the female officer can be heard saying, “No ma’am, no ma’am. You do not do that.” Officials identified the woman as Viramontes, who is charged with possession of marijuana, harassment of a public servant, resisting arrest, search or transport, evading arrest, detention, and traffic warrants.

The video spread widely, but it still does not explain what started the confrontation. What it does show is an arrest effort that escalated from a shop floor to the sidewalk, with officers removing Viramontes from the premises and escorting her outside before the strike that turned the clip into a public issue. The police statement on Friday morning came only after the videos were already circulating, leaving the force to explain an encounter that had already been seen by thousands.

That is the point now: the footage answers what happened, and the question that remains is whether the department will say why officers used that level of force in the first place. For Viramontes, the clip is no longer just part of an arrest; it is the record that will shape how this case is judged next.
