An online campaign calling for Kylian Mbappé to be dropped from Real Madrid gathered more than 12 million signatures in under 24 hours after photographs of the 27-year-old on a yacht in Sardinia surfaced while he was recovering from a hamstring injury.
Mbappé, who joined Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2024 and has scored 85 goals in 100 appearances for the club, had been given time off during his recovery and travelled to Sardinia; the images appeared at roughly the same time Real Madrid were playing Espanyol, and the petition — which had aimed for 200,000 names — exploded on social media.
The timing sharpened a wider crisis. Mbappé returned to the Spanish capital on Sunday evening ahead of the trip to Espanyol; Vinicius Jr. scored twice as Real Madrid won 2-0, but the match did nothing to dampen the torrent of criticism aimed at the club and the player.
Behind the petition lie results and relationships. Real Madrid trail Barcelona by 11 points in La Liga and were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, and reports of unrest have included a heated dressing-room argument in April involving Antonio Rüdiger — who later apologised — and a separate flare-up in training in which Mbappé spoke angrily and insulted a member of staff before the trip to Real Betis on April 24, when he sustained the hamstring injury.
Former players and commentators have been blunt. Benoît Trémoulinas said fans were “very, very, very disappointed,” and argued that Mbappé’s individualistic play can create divisions in the dressing room. Others, including Álvaro Arbeloa, pushed back that players are entitled to spend their free time as they wish and that off-field choices are personal.
The numbers harden the story. More than 12 million people signed the petition in less than a day — sixty times its stated goal — and the optics of the yacht photos arriving while the team was competing deepened frustrations among supporters already alarmed by league position and European elimination.
Those optics are entangled with performance. Mbappé remains Real Madrid’s most potent attacking weapon this season, the club’s top scorer since his arrival, and his output is the rare bright spot in a campaign headed toward a second successive year without La Liga or Champions League silverware.
