Arsenal moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League after beating Burnley on Monday Night Football, leaving Manchester City needing a win at Bournemouth on Tuesday to keep the title race alive.
Manchester City travel to Bournemouth at 7.30pm knowing a draw is not enough — they would be four points behind with one game left — so victory is mandatory if the title is to be decided on the final day. If City win at Bournemouth, they must then beat Aston Villa on Sunday and hope Arsenal fail to win at Crystal Palace to have any chance of overtaking them.
The numbers underline how small the margin for error has become: Arsenal five points clear; one game left after Tuesday; City four points adrift if they drop points at the Vitality. Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Aston Villa have all already confirmed their places in next season's Champions League. Liverpool will join them only if Bournemouth lose on Tuesday night.
The permutations for Bournemouth are stark. A draw would leave them needing to win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday and require Liverpool to lose to Brentford alongside a six-goal swing in goal difference. A win over City would move Bournemouth one point behind Liverpool and guarantee them at least sixth place.
European qualification and relegation are tangled up with the title fight. Aston Villa play the Europa League final on Wednesday and that result affects how many league places carry Champions League or Europa League membership. If Villa do not win the Europa League or do not finish fifth, then fifth, sixth and seventh in the Premier League will qualify for the Europa League and eighth will qualify for the Conference League. If Villa win the Europa League and finish fifth, the top six would all qualify for the Champions League, with seventh entering the Europa League and eighth the Conference League.
Meanwhile Chelsea still harbour a very slim chance of reaching the Champions League but the arithmetic is brutal: they would need to win their final two matches and then rely on a host of other results. Chelsea can move a point behind Brighton with victory on Tuesday night when they host Tottenham at 8.15pm. Tottenham, for their part, can secure safety and relegate West Ham with a win at Stamford Bridge; a victory would move Spurs five points clear of the bottom three with one game remaining, and even a draw would all but save them.
West Ham's path to survival is remote. They would need to beat Leeds on Sunday, hope Tottenham lose to Everton and overturn a 13-goal swing in goal difference to stay up. The same closing fixtures that will decide the title will also set the European places and the three relegation slots, leaving fans and managers glued to epl scores as the night unfolds.
The single most consequential unanswered question is clear: can Manchester City win at Bournemouth at 7.30pm, then beat Aston Villa on Sunday while Arsenal slip at Crystal Palace — or will Arsenal’s five-point cushion be enough to deliver the title before the final whistle of the season?
