The joint action committee of NASU and SSANU has directed its branches to suspend the strike from Monday, May 11, 2026, after reaching a fresh agreement with the federal government’s expanded renegotiation committee.
The circular ordering the ssanu nasu strike suspension was issued on Wednesday and signed by Peters Adeyemi and Mohammed Ibrahim. Branch leaders were told to convene congresses and report the decision, while other talks with relevant stakeholders continue.
The unions had declared the strike on May 1 after accusing the government of failing to conclude renegotiations and of not putting forward a fresh offer on allowances. They also said the pace of discussions had been too slow to meet their expectations, a complaint that helped drive the shutdown of university non-academic and senior staff activities under their joint action committee.
The new understanding follows meetings with the federal government’s expanded renegotiation committee led by Yayale Ahmed. Central to the talks was a controversial 30 percent salary increase under the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure, a proposal that had been raised before being withdrawn by the government.
In its circular, the joint action committee said the FGN Expanded Renegotiation Committee had agreed that all renegotiations, including a reviewed offer of CONTISS, would be concluded within two weeks of the strike’s suspension. It also urged branch leaders to note the appeal and report the suspension effective from May 11, 2026.
The immediate question now is whether the government will meet that two-week deadline. The unions have signaled that the pause in the strike is tied to a commitment on the table, not the end of the dispute, and the next round of talks will determine whether universities stay open or the standoff returns.
