Mohammed Abubakar Adamu has refused to let his defeat in the All Progressives Congress governorship primary in Nasarawa State close the door on his political future. After losing the contest, Adamu said he would not allow the outcome to end his ambition and would pursue it elsewhere.
The primary produced a lopsided result that now sits at the center of a widening dispute inside the party. Hassan Liman scored 863 votes, Senator Ahmed Wadada won with 195,285 votes and Adamu finished with 39,675 votes, but the figures have not settled the fight over what happened in the exercise.
On Saturday in Lafia, Liman told journalists that Wadada is now the duly elected flag bearer of the APC in Nasarawa State. He urged party members and residents to keep the peace, saying power is given by God and that there is no alternative to peace. He also called on Nasarawa citizens, especially APC members, to be law-abiding and peaceful in the way they conduct themselves.
The contest has drawn sharp objections from some stakeholders, who say the primary was marred by irregularities. Adamu has not formally announced his resignation from the APC, leaving open the question of whether he will stay in the party or move ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle. That uncertainty matters because the dispute is no longer just about one primary; it is now about where one of the state’s best-known aspirants goes next.
Yesterday, Prof Mohammad Sani Haruna called for the nullification of the governorship primaries in Nasarawa State and demanded a fresh shadow poll. He said he did not vote because materials meant for his ward were diverted and figures were later declared. Haruna urged the APC national secretariat to review the exercise and conduct a fresh one, arguing that anyone with conscience should reject the result and calling the primary a sham and a slap on democracy.
The APC leadership has said the primary was conducted in line with party guidelines, but the dispute has left the race unsettled heading toward the 2027 general election. The next move belongs to Adamu: he can remain inside the APC and fight on, or he can make good on his pledge to pursue his ambition elsewhere.
