President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power and sent the name to the Senate for screening and confirmation under the Constitution.
The nomination came after the resignation of the former minister, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down to pursue elective office, according to a statement by Bayo Onanuga. Onanuga said Tegbe, from Oyo State, is a fiscal and economic reform expert with more than 35 years of experience across the public and private sectors.
Tegbe’s background stretches beyond power policy. He was a former senior partner and head of advisory services at KPMG Africa, where he led work on fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation and governance. He has also advised government institutions and private sector organisations on strategic reforms, regulatory frameworks and investment structuring.
He is currently the director general and global liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, a role that puts him at the center of efforts to deepen engagement with public sector stakeholders and advance economic and social development in line with FOCAC objectives. That makes his nomination a shift from one broad policy arena to another, with the Senate now holding the next move.
The question now is not whether the post has changed hands, but whether Tegbe’s blend of fiscal reform experience and international partnership work will carry enough weight in a ministry central to Nigeria’s power supply problems. The Senate’s screening will decide that next.
