The United Kingdom High Commissioner in Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, and Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever have met a string of top political figures and electoral officials as attention turns to the 2027 general elections. The UK High Commission said on Thursday that the visits were part of its push to support inclusive and credible polls.
The delegation included Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, 2023 presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, and the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Joash Amupitan. The mission said it looked forward to working with all parties and the interns community to support inclusive and credible elections, a message it repeated as it outlined the meetings on its X handle.
The visits come as foreign partners begin positioning themselves for the next election cycle in Nigeria, where the quality of the vote remains a central political test. TVC News said the meetings were about developments in the country’s political and democratic processes, underscoring the wide cast of players being courted ahead of 2027.
That broad outreach also leaves one practical question in view: whether the UK mission can keep its pledge of working with all contending political parties while staying even-handed in a contest that is already taking shape. For now, the answer from the High Commission is clear. It wants to be in the room with everyone who matters before the campaign season hardens.
