Oseni said Wema Bank was not celebrating for celebration’s sake but to deepen customer support. "With millions of individuals and businesses in our care, we have a deep sense of responsibility towards helping them make meaningful progress and our 81st anniversary presents the perfect opportunity for us to deepen our efforts towards fulfilling that responsibility," he said.

That deepening takes the form of a specialised customer success initiative tied to the anniversary theme, "Your Future of Possibilities, Powered by Wema Bank." The bank said the initiative is designed to provide tailored guidance and support for businesses, students, working-class women, creatives and other customer groups, part of a broader pivot toward targeted, digitally enabled services rather than a single public spectacle.

The bank also used the weekend to relaunch the '5 for 5' rewards program in its fifth Season, with the May 2, 2026 start date set to drive promotions through the ALAT App. Wema Bank said customers would be able to access rewards directly via the app as part of the anniversary activities, a move the bank described as linking celebration to everyday banking convenience.

Oseni outlined a larger strategy behind the tactics. "We are building a smarter and more secure financial future for our customers, one where banking is effortlessly aligned with their goals, intelligently anticipating their needs and proactively providing the right solutions," he said. He added that the bank is "curating opportunities, providing platforms, building an entire ecosystem engineered in the best interests of every unique Wema Bank customer."

The choice to emphasize digital rewards and customer success was deliberate: Wema Bank said this year's anniversary would differ from the grand 80th celebration in 2025 by focusing on direct, technology-driven support and tailored guidance. The bank reiterated its commitment to delivering innovative financial solutions and supporting customers to achieve their goals as the stated through-line of the anniversary activities.

The tension in the plan is practical. Celebrations and app giveaways are immediate and visible; the harder task is turning a weekend of rewards and a targeted initiative into sustained change for "millions of individuals and businesses" the bank names as being in its care. Success will depend on whether the specialised customer programs can scale beyond promotional moments into measurable progress for the targeted groups.
