Five Premier League clubs — Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Liverpool — have already secured places in the expanded 36-team UEFA Champions League league phase, and all five will go straight into the group stage. Arsenal sealed their spot by winning the Premier League and will be appearing in a fourth straight Champions League campaign. Manchester United return to the top table for the first time since 2023/24 after finishing third. Aston Villa took fourth in the table and would have qualified anyway thanks to their Europa League triumph. Liverpool booked their place on the final day with a 1-1 draw at Brentford. The league also earned an extra fifth Champions League place after England’s coefficient ranking rose on the back of last season’s European results.
The immediate arithmetic is clear: 29 of the 36 Champions League league-phase qualifiers are already confirmed, leaving seven places to be decided through qualifying and playoffs. The full 36-team lineup will be finalised after the second legs of the playoff round on August 26, with the Champions League league-phase draw scheduled for August 27 and the Europa League draw the next day on August 28. Meanwhile, all three Europa League qualifiers from England will enter that competition at its 36-team league phase.
Beyond the five Champions League entrants, the Premier League’s expanded presence in Europe reshapes places elsewhere. Bournemouth finished sixth and will play in Europe for the first time in their history. Sunderland beat Chelsea on the final day to qualify for Europe for only the second time in their history, doing so at the expense of Chelsea. Brighton finished eighth and will enter the Conference League. Crystal Palace’s Conference League triumph is directly part of why England will field nine sides across UEFA competitions in 2026/27.
At the continental level, the composition of the confirmed Champions League list reflects a tilt toward the big leagues: there are five teams each from England and Spain, Italy and Germany will each have four representatives, France three, and the Netherlands and Portugal two apiece. Domestic champions from Belgium, Czechia, Turkey and Ukraine earned automatic entry to the league phase, while a number of other champions face short qualifying routes: Viking, AEK Athens, LASK and Celtic must navigate a single two-legged tie to reach the league phase. Clubs such as Lyon, Bodø/Glimt and Olympiacos begin in the third qualifying round; Red Star Belgrade and Fenerbahçe start in the second; and Kairat start in the first qualifying round and must win four two-legged ties to repeat their 2025/26 league-phase appearance.
The tension in the weeks ahead is structural as much as sporting. Big English clubs have secured direct access to the group stage, but seven places still hang in the balance and will be fought for across four qualifying rounds beginning in August. Smaller domestic champions and teams starting early in qualifying face a longer, riskier route to the league phase, while the extra berths for England and Spain — earned by their clubs’ performances in 2025-26 — concentrate more heavyweight clubs into the group stage.
The clearest question left on the table is which of the clubs starting in the early qualifying rounds — from Kairat through the third-round entrants such as Lyon or Olympiacos — will upset the formbook and fill the seven remaining Champions League places by the August 26 playoff deadline, thereby finishing the field ahead of the August 27 league-phase draw.
