Residents of Agbado in Lagos State staged a protest at the office of Ikeja Electric on Tuesday after weeks without power, locking the entrance and demanding immediate restoration of electricity supply. The demonstrators were mostly women, and many carried placards as they called on authorities to step in.
The protest focused on a blackout that residents said had disrupted homes, businesses and daily activities, while forcing families and shop owners to spend heavily on alternative power sources. Some protesters said repeated complaints to ikeja electric brought little or no response, and they accused the company of failing to say clearly when power would return.
Community members said the outage had dragged on for weeks before they took their grievance to the company’s office, turning frustration over one neighborhood fault into a broader confrontation over communication and service. The women who led the protest said they wanted immediate action, not another promise.
Officials of Ikeja Electric appealed for calm and said technical challenges were responsible for the disruption. The company said efforts were underway to address the fault and restore stable electricity to the affected areas.
The dispute now hangs on a plain issue: whether the company can fix the fault quickly enough to answer the residents’ anger before the blackout becomes one more lasting grievance in Lagos’s recurring power supply problems.
