Yusuf Buhari won the APC House of Representatives primary for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua Federal Constituency in Katsina State on Saturday, setting up what party officials say will put him on the ballot for 2027. Daily Trust reported that Buhari said on Twitter during the exercise that he had already secured a landslide victory.
The scale of the win depends on which count is cited. Lawan Garba, who chaired the constituency’s APC primary election committee, said Buhari secured 17,342 votes and Auwalu Musa Daura received 480. Punch reported a different tally, saying Buhari won with 6,386 votes to Daura’s 322, after 6,837 delegates were accredited and 6,708 votes were cast in a constituency with 21,855 registered voters.
Buhari described the exercise as peaceful in an interview with DCL Hausa after the vote. Party officials who supervised the primary also described it as peaceful and transparent. He said anyone not satisfied with the result was free to seek redress, and added that he was optimistic he would emerge victorious in the 2027 general elections.
Daura rejected the outcome and said the process did not comply with APC guidelines. He also said many of the participants were not registered APC members. That challenge lands after Daily Trust reported that Daura had earlier refused to step down for Buhari despite efforts to reach a consensus arrangement, underscoring the fight that surrounded the ticket before a ballot was even held.
The result has already stirred reactions across the Daura axis, where the Buhari family remains politically influential. One political observer, Ibrahim, said Buhari’s win reflected the enduring goodwill attached to the family name in the constituency and across Katsina State. For now, the APC has its candidate, and Buhari is betting that the same name power that carried him through the primary will hold through 2027.
