Man Utd squad arrive for Brentford game

United boss said Patrick Dorgu will play again this season and indicated the teenager is closing in on the squad after nearly three months out.

Captured by MUTV cameras among the team arrivals at ahead of Monday’s 20:00 BST Premier League kick-off with Brentford, was visible and part of the travelling group as United prepared for a tough home fixture.

Carrick underlined the limited but encouraging nature of Dorgu’s return, saying: "Patrick's looking to get back closer to the group in a very small part, which is fantastic, because he's worked so hard over a period of time now," and adding, "So it'll be good to have him back in and around the group within the next week or so."

The timing matters. Dorgu has not featured since suffering a muscle injury at Arsenal in January — the setback coming after he had scored in United's 3-2 victory at the Emirates — and the absence stretched to 10 games. His reappearance on the edge of the squad is the clearest sign yet that the club expects him to re-enter the match-day picture before the season ends.

Carrick was careful to temper expectations about immediate playing time while outlining the challenge waiting at Old Trafford. "They're a very good team, I have to say," he said of the visitors, and later: "It’s a big challenge for us. They’ve got some really good players and are very dangerous going forward, so we’re going to have to be ready for that." The manager also singled out Brentford's coach: "Keith's (Andrews) done an unbelievable job this season and in so many different ways, you know. He needs a lot of credit for that," before noting, "They’re right up there challenging, it’s really tight. There’s a lot to play for, but they’re a good team and make it really difficult."

The broader squad picture at the Brentford game offered further context to Dorgu's return. was present after missing the 1-0 win at Chelsea last time out, while was available again after suspension. Those returns contrast with other absences: Lisandro Martinez remained banned for the upcoming game against Liverpool, a suspension that will influence team selection in matches to come.

The tension in the room was plain. Carrick’s words suggest Dorgu will be eased back in rather than thrust straight into full matches, and the manager’s repeated references to the quality and danger of Brentford underline why caution is logical. The teenager’s long-range goal and subsequent injury in January are part of the same small story line — a promising rise interrupted at a moment when the team still needs reinforcements.

For United, the immediate prize is navigating a run of competitive fixtures with as much depth as possible. Dorgu’s return, even in a limited role at first, would increase available options for Carrick during a runwhere margins are thin and results difficult to secure. Equally, pushing a player back too quickly would risk a setback after a 10-game absence.

The realistic conclusion is that Dorgu will rejoin training and match-day squads in a managed way over the next week or so, giving Carrick the choice of a bench option or a brief cameo before any fuller involvement. If that plan holds, the club will have added a young attacking option at a time when every squad member could matter in the run-in for Premier League points.
