The Senate on Wednesday confirmed Lamido Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria after considering a report from its Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions and endorsing the nomination by voice vote. Lawmakers gave the nominee an easy passage after a brief screening that ended with overwhelming approval in plenary.
Adetokunbo Abiru said Yuguda was qualified for the post under Section 8 of the CBN Act and had shown strong financial and monetary expertise during screening earlier in the day. Osita Izunaso moved to dispense with detailed questioning, Sarafadeen Alli seconded the motion, and Danjuma Goje backed the confirmation, saying President Bola Tinubu had made the right choice.
Godswill Akpabio then put the question to a voice vote and described Yuguda as “a square peg in a square hole.” The Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions had already used the “take a bow and go” tradition for the nominee, a sign of how little resistance his appointment drew on the floor.
Last week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Lamido Abubakar Yuguda for the job, and the committee said it had no petitions against him. The same panel had screened him three different times in the past for other senior financial roles, including director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission, which helped explain the speed of Wednesday’s approval.
The only wrinkle is the paper trail itself: reports have carried slightly different versions of the nominee’s full name, including Lamido Yuguda, Lamido Abubakar Yuguda and Mahmoud Isa Yugudu. But the outcome was not in doubt on Wednesday. The Senate confirmed him, and he now takes up one of the central bank’s top posts with the backing of the chamber that just cleared his path.
